New York Giants

Reported: March 3, 2006

Offense
WR The Giants made a big splash in free agency last offseason with the addition of Plaxico Burress and he had a very positive affect on the team in 2005. Opposite of Burress though, the team really needs to develop a younger, No. 2 option. 2006 will be Amani Toomer's 11th year in the NFL, all with the Giants, if they choose to keep him around. The Giants may cut Toomer to save them some salary cap space, but it's not likely. Both Willie Ponder and David Tyree are possible candidates to the No. 2 slot, but they will unrestricted free agents NEXT year. The Giants will want to either think around signing one of their younger receivers to long-term contracts or possibly look for a young receiver on the first day of the draft. A guy like Derek Hagan or Martin Nance could be available when the Giants are on the clock in the second round.

OL The Giants made a great move last season when they signed OT Kareem McKenzie away from the cross-town rivalry Jets. Helped solidify the line and they gave up considerably less sacks (27) in 2005. The interior of the Giants line is still a little suspect and could maybe use some bulk and depth. Shaun O'hara is an average center that gets by on guile and determination. If the Giants really felt like it, they could upgrade here, but O'Hara is a bargain and somewhat of a team leader. They would be smart to find some depth for the interior of this unit if they want to make a deep push into the playoffs. Yes, we're nit-picking.

Defense
SS The Giants finished the season ranked 27th in total pass defense. The unit did improve a little bit as the season went on, but I don't think many New Yorkers are going to forget the images of Steve Smith waltzing into the endzone anytime soon. Brent Alexander has announced his retirement and the Giants need to find his replacement soon. They could look to the draft in the first or second round and nab a player like Darnell Bing or Donte Whitner to try to fill his shoes if they are there. The Giants don't have a ton of money, right now, to spend in free agency, so their best option may be the draft.

LB The team got good production out of Antonio Pierce last season until he missed three games with a high ankle sprain. Pierce will be back at full-strength in 2006 but the Giants need to surround him with some better playmakers. Alonzo Jackson and Reggie Torbor are average linebackers, at best, and probably shouldn't be starting. The free agents linebackers out there this year aren't that impressive, so the G-men will want to think long and hard about selecting a playmaking LB with their first pick in the NFL draft. If Ohio State LB Bobby Carpenter is available when the Giants are on the clock, they should sprint up to the podium and make the pick. Ernie Simms may be another guy that they may want to take a look at to bolster the position.

CB Again, the Giants pass defense in 2005 was quite pathetic. Anything they can do to bolster their secondary would be a plus. They are going to have to think about spending multiple draft picks on players to improve this unit. There are also some veteran players in free agency, like Sam Madison, Ty Law and Andre Dyson, who they may make a run at to improve the ranking of this unit.
