the Cardinals Team Needs in the Cardinals Forum

One of the main reason the Cardinals offense struggled to run the
ball last season was their instability on the offensive line. Injuries
and unispired play, coupled with a first year offensive line coach
were most of the reason for the offensive line's struggles last season.
The Cards have brought in Steve Loney to coach the offensive line
which should improve the overall play of the unit. Loney coached Oliver
Ross in college and should be able to get the best of his abilities
out of him. The big question is if he can get OT Leonard Davis to
produce at the top-notch level the team expects him to play at. The
Cards would still be well-served to add some talent to the interior
of this unit in the early and middle rounds of the draft |

RB |
- The
Cardinals were the worst rushing team in the league last year, so
you know this has to be a major need headed into the 2006 offseason.
J.J. Arrington was drafted in the 3rd round, but didn't get out of
the gates strong and seemed to lose his confidence as the season went
on. Arrington may be more suited as a 3rd down back in the NFL because
of his diminutive stature and the Cards could be in line to draft
one of the top backs in the draft at the 10th position. Fans are already
clamoring for Lendale White out of USC and it wouldn't suprise us
one bit to see the Cards nab him at that spot. A big RB like White
would make defenses think twice about sitting back in pass coverage
all day or constantly blitzing the QB. |

TE |
The
Cardinals haven't had an impact player at this position since Freddie
Jones left via free agency/retirement. Current TEs Eric Edwards, Adam
Bergan or Teyo Johnson don't exactly make opposing teams game plan
for their presence. There are two top-notch TE prospects coming out
of the draft this season in Vernon Davis(Maryland) and Marcedes Lews(UCLA)
who could really make a difference in the Cards offense, but will
the team take them at the No. 10 spot in the draft? That may a bit
high in our estimation. If they don't spend their first round pick,
look for them to go with what they had for 2005 season or take a look
at some middle tier free agents like Aaron Shea or Matt Shobel. |

QB |
- Kurt
Warner played admirably in 2005, when he was healthy, and the Cards
are expected to re-sign the veteran signal-caller for the 2006 season.
Even if the Cards choose to retain Warner, they are going to need
a young arm to develop for the future. John Navarre and Rohan Davey
sit behind Warner and neither has shown much to say that they are
the Cards long-term answer beyond Warner. Don't expect the Cards to
spend their first round pick on a young QB, but don't be suprised
if they pick up a young arm like Omar Jacobs from Bowling Green or
Brodie Croyle out of Alabama in the early to middle rounds of the
draft. |

- The Cards still
lack a true playmaking linebacker in the bunch that they have. Karlos
Dansby has shown some flashes of talent and is a fine prospect and
may turn into that type of player, but no other player in the Cards
LB corps seems to have that same type of potential. Orland Huff is
too inconsistent and seems to disappear in games at times. Last years
draft pick, Daryll Blackstock could wind up pushing Huff for playing
time in 2006, but didn't get a chance to show much his rookie season.
James Darling is just a steady player and not much more. With the
talent that the Cards have on the offensive line, you expect more
out of the this linebacking corps. This years draft class is very
strong at linebacker, compared to years past, and the Cards could
take another shot in the middle rounds at finding a diamond in the
rough. |

- Robert Griffith
may be headed for retirement this offseason. His play has been declining
steadily ever since he left the Vikings and may have bottomed out
last season. The Cards would be wise to find his possible replacement
in free agency, since there could possibly be some attractive safties
on the open market this season. Tank Williams and Adam Archuleta are
a couple of names that come to mind who could really help the Cards
secondary improve. The Cardinals have plenty of money available this
offseason and could be real players in the FA market. |
