TE |
-The
Bengals don't use their tight ends much in the passing game. Their
best pass catching tight end, Matt Schobel, is a free agent this year
and it's expected that he will be elsewhere next year. There's no
telling how potent this offense could be if they are able to land
a top flight pass catching tight end. This isn't a huge need because
they've done pretty well without much from the tight end. |

QB |
-
After the injury to Carson Palmer, the backup quarterback position
suddenly became very important. Jon Kitna has been on the roster for
some years and he can fill in for Palmer quite nicely. The problem
is that Kitna is a free agent with aspirations of starting somewhere.
The Bengals need to make it a priority to resign Kitna because of
his familiarity of the Bengals offense. Don't be surprised if Palmer
isn't starting in week 1. |

OL |
- The
Bengals are really solid on the line. So why do we put this position
as a team need? The simple reason is that all five starters' contracts
are up at the end of the 2006 season. It would be very wise of the
Bengals to resign some of these guys now instead of having the possibility
of all of your starters leaving via free agency. |

DT |
- The
Bengals ranked 20th against the run last year. What the Bengals need
is a big boy to occupy a couple of offensive linemen. They need one
of those players whose stats never look gaudy but his importance to
the team can't be measured. That would allow the DEs and LBs to do
their thing. |

SS |
- The
Bengals ranked 26th against the pass last year. They are in pretty
good shape at FS, but expect them to use one of their first two picks
on a strong safety. If Darnell Bing, from USC, is still on the board
when the Bengals pick in the first round, it will be very tempting
to take him. If he is gone, they may wait until the second round to
take a safety. |

DE |
- If
Justin Smith can continue to improve then this position will already
be improved from within. They still need a DE that can clog up the
run. This isn't the Bengals biggest need so this position can easily
be filled with a lesser free agent and/or a second day draft pick. |
