On The Burner: Rookie QB edition

By Mitchell Jacobs - June 25th, 2007

This year could be a big year for rookie quarterbacks, JaMarcus Russell, Brady Quinn, Kevin Kolb, Drew Stanton, Trent Edwards and maybe even Troy Smith who could see some action this season. JaMarcus Russell appears the most likely player to start early this year since he is competing with Josh McCown and Andrew Walter. Walter just wasn't able to do much in the Raiders offense in 2006, but then again, neither could anyone else on the Raiders squad.

Here are the QBs "On The Burner" the rest of rookies eagerly waiting to be lit.

On The Burner

Charlie Frye- He has had a consistent "leg up" as the starting QB for the 2007 Cleveland Browns during the off-season. His leg up consists of starting most of the games for the Browns in 2006. His experience against division foes like Pittsburgh and Baltimore also gives him a slight edge in the QB competition that is likely to take place in the Browns training camp. Charlie will have to be pretty darn close to perfect to keep that leg up, because Derek Anderson is creeping up behind him and if rookie Brady Quinn can get into camp on time, he should be a factor.

Waiting to be lit

Brady Quinn- There are two things that will keep Brady Quinn from being the starting QB in Cleveland for the majority of the season; A lengthy holdout by him and his agent or a hot start by the Browns to start the season. The more likely of the two scenarios is a holdout, since we are talking about a team that has gone 10 - 22 over the past two seasons. But if Quinn is able to get into camp on time and either Charlie Frye of Derek Anderson struggle out of the gate, look for Quinn to take the reigns of the Browns offense by week 8 or 9. With some intriguing offensive weapons, Quinn may be able to give you a quality start two down the stretch if you run into QB problems on your roster.

On The Burner

Donovan McNabb- He will put up excellent fantasy numbers very early on, but he is bound to get hurt again. He is a big boy and will have a tough road ahead of him with his lingering injuries.

Waiting to be Lit

Kevin Kolb - Kelly Holcomb was brought in to back up, but Kolb was drafted with the Eagles first pick in the 2007 draft. The Eagles seem to believe if McNabb does not work out Kolb could be the QB of the future. Kolb has a great cast to learn from as long as McNabb can handle that. Kolb may not be the best fantasy option but then again no one expected Garcia to work out, so keep your eyes peeled on this rookie.

On The Burner

Jon Kitna - Jon is a great quarterback he even mentored current Bengals QB Carson Palmer. Kita had a solid performance throwing for over 4200 yards, but he throws a lot of interceptions. The Lions have been drafting wide receivers for years now and between 2006 breakout star Mike Furrey, and 1st round picks in 2004 and 2007, Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson, no QB in Detroit should falter but if Kitna should then…

Waiting to be Lit

Drew Stanton - He is fast, he has a good arm, he's smart and he is going to be a fantasy star for years to come. With so many teams in need of a starting quarterback, Detroit passed on taking future QB in the first round to take another wide receiver, they watched as teams passed on Brady Quinn and other quarterbacks but when Stanton fell to them, I am sure that they were pleased. In any keeper league this quarterback will have many eyes on him because of the offensive threats around him. If not 2007 look for Stanton to be a big impact in 2008.
